Giraffe birth are a bit of traumatic event, to the casual observer. The mother does not lie down to give a birth--that means the calf drops to the hard earth in a rather ungraceful way. The calf drops a distance about 6 feet, but can reach a staggering 8 foot drop. There is a good reason for this birth-- the fall shocks the system and the calf has a far better chance of breathing air and general survival.
